Our Packaging Sustainability Progress: Read Sanitarium’s Latest APCO Annual Report

Respecting our planet is at the heart of everything we do here at Sanitarium. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, including the way we package our products.  

Our progress in packaging sustainability has been recognised in the results of our latest  Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) Annual Report and Action Plan*.  

APCO is a co-regulatory, not for profit organisation that partners with government and industry to reduce packaging’s impact on the Australian environment.

Our APCO Annual Report charts our performance against the APCO Packaging Sustainability Framework, which assesses and tracks packaging sustainability.

In our latest report, our overall performance improved keeping our Leading status. This was primarily driven by improvements to material efficiency and recoverability of our packaging, and the removal of packaging materials that are problematic for recycling.

Sanitarium is actively supporting the reinstatement of recycling programs in Australia and supports Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia (SPSA). SPSA is facilitating more recycling of soft plastics and creating a new advanced plastics recycling industry in Australia. SPSA aims to work towards a circular, high value market for soft plastics — and ultimately, less landfill.
