Sanitarium sets sights on sustainable packaging targets

We’re aiming to make all our product packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, adopting several recent packaging changes that aim to reduce our use of virgin plastic and help divert tonnes of soft plastic from landfill every year.

These changes include introducing the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) on Weet-Bix™ and Marmite™ to provide clear recycling instructions, and introducing new Marmite jars made from 100% recycled plastic.

These packaging changes are important milestones on our sustainable packaging roadmap, with more collaboration with government, industry and recycling organisations to come over the next three years to achieve our target.

We have also launched a new sustainable packaging hub on our website. It includes clear guidance on how to recycle packaging across the full range of Sanitarium products, updates on our sustainable packaging efforts as well as advice on other ways New Zealanders can take a more sustainable approach to food.

“Packaging material improvements and clear advice to consumers on how to recycle are among the most impactful ways Sanitarium and other food manufacturers can help make recycling easier and contribute to a cleaner, greener New Zealand,” said Chris Stanbridge, Sanitarium's Sustainability and Product Development Manager.

“As well as improving the sustainability of our packaging, we’ve developed resources to help households reduce their own carbon footprint through other measures such as reducing food waste and making more sustainable food choices,” she said.

Here's just a few things you can explore on our new sustainable packaging hub:

How to recycle Marmite and Weet-Bix

Look for these labels on pack

Marmite

All marmates need to do is dig in, rinse and recycle! Marmite jars, like other food jars, should be thoroughly washed and dried before putting them in the recycling bin. Check with your local council if lids should be on or off for kerbside recycling.

Weet-Bix
Eat the bix, recycle the box and soft plastic recycle the bag. The easiest way to find your local soft plastic recycling drop off point is to check the Soft Plastic Recycling website
