The Sanitairum Weet-Bix TRYathlon and decades of community participation
It is all About Giving it a TRY!
Since 1992, the Sanitarium Weet-Bix TRYathlon encouraged Kiwi kids to give it a TRY.
With just 500 kids participating in its first year, the iconic event has grown over the past 30+ years to become New Zealand’s biggest sporting event and inspire more than 500,000 Kiwi kids to give it a TRY. Almost 20,000 kids participated in the 2025/26 season.
Held at 11 spots across New Zealand from Dunedin to Auckland, kids aged 6 to 15 years old get to run, swim, bike or do all three, all with vary distances and difficulties.
It has enabled Kiwi kids to get outside and make healthy lifestyle choices, build confidence and get active with their peers.
We also established the Weet-Bix TRYathlon Foundation in 2007 to help thousands of disadvantaged Kiwi kids participate by subsidising entries and providing essential gear like bikes and helmets, turning dreams into reality.
What is the TRYathlon and why was it started?
At its heart, the TRYathlon initiative grew from Sanitarium’s founding philosophy of supporting and caring for community health.
Guided by this purpose, we’re committed to contributing to the community, making a real difference, and helping people experience happier, healthier lives.
Getting kids moving to build healthy habits and boosting their confidence of having a go and reaching personal goals in a supportive environment is what participation is all about.
We love seeing children all across New Zealand giving it a TRY – why not get involved at the next one?
